Review of Best Practices for Selection, Installation, Operation and Maintenance of Gas Meters for Flare Applications Used for Managing Facility Mass Balance and Compliance - Flares and Combustion

Flare measurement is one of the most challenging measurement applications there are. The requirements for accuracy combined with wide rangeability, varying compositions, installation effects, and handling of different type of non-hydrocarbon gases, calls for a reliable measurement method and technology. Ultrasonic technology applied to flare measurement has been the go-to solution in the industry for years to comply with this ever-changing process and allows for compliance with regulations as well as helping facilities to work on their mass balance for reporting purposes and provide an early detection of any potential upset in the process. This presentation will cover how measurement technology is used by process and instrumentation specialists to be able to manage the challenges inherent in the flare gas measurement applications. It will cover why flare measurement is required from the operational perspective and from the environmental and regulatory perspective. In addition, a discussion of the technology selection process, identifying installation guidelines, operating and maintenance best practices will be covered. Ultimately, a detailed discussion involving managing measurement the gas to flare by understanding the feasibility of using this technology to get the best possible measurement results and get the most value from the data provided by it.
